    BZP

Post by Tyler Durden on Tue Aug 23, 2011 4:48 pm

It's been just about four months, and I decided to revive the old "is it coming back?" topic Skar started.

I voted I stopped caring. Maybe I'll feel differently once it comes back up, but I feel like...I've adapted to life without it.

I said maybe, I'm leaning towards no, because, Bionicle ended just last year, the last few months we had on BZP were its death days.

On the other hand, it could come back, but activity levels would be so low, BZP would never be the same, at least not for a long time.

So, it's kinda 60%(not coming back) 40%(coming back) IMO, it may not come back, and it might come back.

But seriously, how f_ing long does it take to change forum servers? Not four months, it doesn't.

On top of Zar's point, if they aren't going to work on the site, they just will say it. Remember who these people are -- they aren't a bunch of trolls and ragekids, they are adults.

@Skar: A server? You call finding a new host, coding the whole forums, creating new rules for each and everyone of them, on top of that archiving the old forums, making sure it works, AND the new main page... just a server? I think not.

Guys, if you really don't care all that much, don't critisize them. It's worth the wait. By the time the site it's up, you won't be getting clattered by board messages once and every second.

Rig, you seem to love playing the criticism card. The fact is, all of that could easily have been done by now, let alone how much time they could still be down for.

Besides, I rarely ever got board messages on BZP.

I kept getting them each time I logged on. It's not that easy as it sounds. I realized yet alone doing so much set up takes up hours, and much persuasion.

Point is, they are setting up a completely new forum, to handle thousands of users. It's not that easy, and it's going to take time. Anyhow.

And four months of lacking one forum is such a large inconvenience for you?

Honestly, I've lacked four months of positive social activity before. That isn't to say that BZP being down isn't bad or an inconvenience; of course it is. But I am trying to put things in perspective. Things aren't as bad as they could be on either the 'time', or the 'what's lacking during said time', end of the line.

Giving them time without wasting ones, and others, time complaining is what I think is best right now. Look on the bright side: when it does come back, it won't be off half as much, and it'll be back. And if BZPower being down is so bad that after four months of life without it, people are complaining about the thing taking too long, then said people should be so ecstatic that they're jumping out of their boots to have it back.

But does it really take that long to do what they're supposedly doing? Personally, I don't know, but that's a heck of a long time to make a website, especially one that they're basically just renewing.

Well, think of how many addons they made. Now add in every problem and difficulty they have had, or could have had.

    1) The forum software they intended on using for the archived forums not working out.
    2) Having to move to a new server due to IPB ending their service.
    3) Having to upgrade to IPB 3, which could potentially have different settings that they have to get used to.
    4) Having to contact every forum leader in order to have them rewrite rules and repost important topics.
    5) Adding new forums.
    6) Reprogramming all their edits to the software to adapt to IPB.
    7) Balancing work, their own lives, the news, BZPowercast, Brickfair etc as well as this.

All I can think of, but that could take quite some time, especially if things go wrong a lot.

Still, four months is enough time to tough it through those problems, even if the process went slowly. Four months is quite a bit of time to do something.

    But not this.

    This is hard work, dude.

Invision is NOT Forumotion, or even Invisionfree.

Also, there is the matter of the archive forums - they're a difficult mess, probably, because they can't use the old forum as far as I'm concerned.

But four whole months... heck, when did it go down? It might be nearing FIVE months.

If so, that's nearly a half a year to do a website, one that has archives to go by, can you imagine what it would be like to make a site like BZP from scrap? They've got it easy, no matter how 'professional' making a website is. Even 'con-artists' like us could do it, if we knew a little bit about coding.

They've probably got at LEAST 20 people doing stuff, or maybe just 10-15, that's enough people to pretty much just slap n' paste a new BZP together. Yes, there is a lot of coding involved, but they've been working on it for four-five months now, it's time for it to be done already.

Plus, adding to what I've said, they have already stated that they are almost done, and are just working out a few more things... they said that mid July (or was it JUNE?) I think it should have been back by now.

Skar, you're not noticing one problem.

In this discussion, since you're providing the idea, you're supposed to refute arguments that deny it any rational ground.

Namely, why would they tell us they're working on it?

If you can't refute this argument, your whole point is moot, sorry to say.

Because the fans and users of BZPower want to know the status of their website, that's why. Switching servers and saving archives shouldn't take four months, unless, that is, that nobody does much work on it, and they're really just lazing off and ignoring it sometimes.

BZP could have such a huge comeback that its activity levels rise through the clouds, or, it can have such a weak comeback that activity levels drop below the ground, so far that it isn't worth having a forum anymore.

Yes, both of those options of possible. Devoted BZP fans who were crazy about BZP will be back the first day, heck, the first HOUR BZP gets back. I'm still saying maybe, it could come back, and it could not come back.

I don't see the possibility of it NOT coming back, though.

I truly don't see a single real argument that refutes my argument of "Why would they say they're working on it?"

Also, have you ever tried doing their work?

    No, you haven't.

So you don't know how much time it takes.

Can I jump in an add something?

Lately, as you've may heard, I'm working on a completely new layout for the whole MNI forum. It's gonna be switched to PunBB from Invision, and will allow full customization via html. We will have our own drop down menu, etc.

I begun working on it yesterday for about 3 hours, and you know what I did? I just played with colors, placed the right settings and shorted problems, until I slept. Woke up today, did the same for 2 hours, and I feel I've only done 4% of the work.

Setting up a forum, much more inserting custom html from another one ISN'T easy. It's extremely hard, since it's new territory for the designer. They need to learn themselves how the forum operates to do it, or else, it's impossible to help others, and it will suck. Remember, who said their host will transfer all that millions of posts in one day? If their busy, IT could take months. Moreover, they have a whole new news page to set up, and write new rules for each of the new forums.

In the end, the longer it takes to do, the better it will become. They decide if it's worth to updating you or not, because, HECK they are doing this only for you and not themselves. You know how much ti costs them to do all this? IPB3 isn't cheap.

Finally, why on Earth wouldn't the forum comeback one day? Why would they be saying all of this if they weren't doing it..?
